PAIMIO SANATORIUM, PAIMIO, FINLAND
Architect: Alvar Aalto
Built between 1929 and 1933, the sanatorium was intended to be far more than a simple hospital: it was conceived
as a “medical instrument,” in which every element of the architecture would contribute to healing—light, air, color,
and furniture.
At a time when many healthcare buildings were cold and utilitarian, Aalto’s project introduced a profoundly human
dimension. Every detail—from the orientation of the patient rooms to maximize exposure to sunlight to the design
of the door handles—was carefully considered to ease the burden on patients weakened by illness.
